5 out of 5 stars Never "re-decorate" your Christmas tree daily again!   November 23, 2007

If you're tired of having your Christmas tree climbed, or finding the ornaments under your furniture daily, or the garland dragged onto the floor, or seeing your cats anywhere you don't want them to be (or just witnessing the aftermath of where they've been where they shouldn't), this product is for you! Since I bought it, turned it on and put it under my Christmas tree, I have not had a problem with my cats even going anywhere near the thing! Forget all the other tricks (including hanging bells low on the tree so they'll jingle when the cats rattle it, or purposely hanging ornaments low that they can "have" to play with...the first only works if you're home to hear, and the second only trains them to believe the whole tree is fair game!).

The reason this product works so well is that it trains cats to stay away from forbidden places at ALL times...even when you are out of the room, asleep or not at home! Other deterrents depend on your presence and your ability to swiftly respond and match "penalty" with the crime...cats soon come to realize that as soon as you can't see or hear their mischief, it's party time! But StayAway works 24/7...whether you're there to catch 'em in the act or not! Cats otherwise used to doing as they please the second you leave the place or shut your eyes soon learn...the punishment comes whether or not you're there! Eventually they become too scared to even go near that part of the room...at any time. It's an effective form of training that does pets no harm.

If you have problems with cats on counters, cats in houseplants, whatever, set this can near or on what you're trying to protect and you will have problems no more. Eventually you won't even need it turned on at all...the very sight of the thing will keep them away! (And if they ever figure out that trick and start giving you trouble again, just turn it back on until the problem ends!) It may be more expensive than squirt bottles or double-stick tape, but IT WORKS! Get it this Christmas (or any other time of year) and finally have peace of mind!

I got one of these several months ago to keep the cat off the counters. As far as i know, it's working. I never see the cat up there. It also keeps the dogs out of any area or room i don't want them in.

When i first read about this concept on the web, i read about the SSSCAT product by Premier and i came to Amazon to buy it, but i read reviews in which the users reported that there was an older version of the product that had both a sound alarm and the spray of air, with the option to use sound only. SSSCAT was advertised as having both features, but users reported it had air spray only, no alarm. Apparently no one updated the page on Amazon after they discontinued the alarm. There were disappointed reviewers complaining that the product was not correctly described in the ad, and also, that the alarm option was not available anymore.

I really wanted the alarm, with the option of sound only. The spray uses up the supply of air pretty fast, and then it costs $20 including shipping to get another can of air, that doesn't last very long. I was very disappointed that the Premier product took this feature away. That's when a search led to the discovery of StayAway. True enough, the spray ran out very quick when i first got it. I had to buy a new one and during the long period between buying the refill and receiving it, there was no continuity of the cat's training. But since then, i have used mostly the alarm/sound only and not the spray, and have not run out of spray again, after a very long time, months.

I began worrying that it would wear out and that the product would be discontinued, and also, i wanted to position more of them in different parts of the house, so i just bought two more today.

In other words, i think they're great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product!   January 9, 2007

My little 5 mo old kitten is naturally exploring her new domain daily and the kitchen counter is no exception. My orchid plants are my babies, and I certainly do not want a little furry creature knocking them over. I placed this can on the counter and it easily picks up any detection of movement. The warning beep and then the spray, and my little explorer was speeding away as fast as she could go. She still has not returned to the counter, so this product is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Effectively trained my cat to avoid dangerous places   November 16, 2009

Responsible cat owners should have one.
I have an affectionate black and white short hair feline named 'Percy' (I didn't pick the name). And like anything I love I want to protect him, but cats are nibble and quite capable of getting into places that are dangerous. Any responsible parent wouldn't let their child run wild without limits or warnings, so why is it okay to own a pet and let it go and do whatever it wants? Many times I've found cats up under my car or in my tool shed. Once, and I still can't explain it, my Percy got up into the attic and couldn't get out. I could hear him meowing for help. I finally had to make a hole in the garage ceiling to get him down. So far we've been lucky but I'm wasn't going to bet his life on it so I started looking for anything I could use to teach him what places were off limits. In my search I saw this product and ordered two of them. and I must say the results have been instant. The first day I placed one on a shelf in my garage where I keep automotive supplies like oil, paint and antifreeze, I've seen him up there a number of times and sometimes he knocks stuff off. Heaven forbid if a can of paint or bottle of anitfreeze popped open and he drank it. The second one I put on my kitchen counter, a place I've frequently tried to keep him away from. As soon as I was out of the room I heard a alarm sound and burst of air, and Percy ran by me in a flash. Now I will admit that did give me a bit of pleasure and a chuckle but it was clearly an effective and safe learning experience for him. After a few days I noticed that I didn't see him on the counter or in the shelves, so I started moving the StayAway sensors around to different places and after a couple weeks I still haven't had to replace the air canisters yet eventhough I have gotten myself startled a couple of times.
I've even been using it to train the neighborhood cats. Every time I park my truck a couple cats crawl over and under it, I understand they like the warmth but if one of them goes to sleep in the engine compartment and I don't notice well . . Now I keep the StayAways in my truck and when I park I put one on the hood and one on the ground and after a few days I rarely see cats near it. Its a good product I think every responsible cat owner should have one.

5 out of 5 stars Works on Dogs, Too!   November 15, 2009

I'm an animal trainer and behaviorist, and spend the majority of my time working with dogs with behavioral problems. I consider aversives to be a last ditch effort to save a dog's life when all else fails, and I'm happy to say that, thanks to StayAway, I haven't ever had to use more severe products like the Scat Mat (which emits an electric shock when touched.)

I use this product primarily for stopping counter-surfing dogs when alternatives aren't enough. A few StayAways placed strategically along the counter tops has successfully stopped even the most hardcore counter surfing dogs from stealing things off the counter or table - even when the counter is baited with a tasty treat like broiled chicken - after just a few sprays. I do not typically use the warning beep, but it is a handy function to have!

I've tried Premier's comperable product, and was highly dissatisfied with the quality, among other things, so decided to try Contech's product instead. I now have four StayAways, and only turn them on while in the process of training; my only gripe about this product is that when turned on, it emits three blasts of air (which wastes the product) and it still eats through batteries. I would also really like a wider range of adjustability, and a narrower blast of air. Despite these flaws, the product does what it claims to do, and overall, I'm extremely satisfied with it!
