How do I clean and take care of sand in an aquarium?

cwbhawk asked:

I would like to use sand instead of gravel as substrate for a 55 gallon aquarium. But i have no idea how to take care of it because i have only used gravel as substrate in my previous aquariums. Do i need any speacial tools? Is there a certain way i am supposed to siphon the poo from the top of the sand.

The advantage of having sand is you don’t have to dig through it to find all the waste. All you need to do is take your gravel filter and siphon right off the top of the sand. the waste will come, and if the sand isn’t too fine, the sand will stay in place. I’d recommend trial and error on removing waste without much sand.

Side note, make sure your sand isn’t too thick (under 2 inches), otherwise anarobic bacteria make Pockets in the sand that are not only unsightly, but also can harm your fish with the toxins they produce.

this video is a really good demonstration of how to clean and maintain sand substrates. Sometimes it just helps to see somebody else do it.

    good luck!

Me and my stepdad have a marine tank each, and we use live sand. My stepdad has a special sand hoover thing, that cleans the sand. I think they are about five pounds on eBay :)
