How to disinfect rocks from the backyard to put into aquarium?

Monday, December 28th, 2009
Leika S asked:

I found some pretty cool stones, and I want to use them in my cichlid aquarium. They’re not porous, they’re slabs of rock.
Right now I have them soaking in boiling water, and a high concentration of aquarium salt.
Will they be safe in my aquarium after this?
I expect the hot water and salt to kill any microorganisms that may hard my fish.

I have about ten tropical fish in a 12 gallon aquarium that has been established for a little more than two years. I recently purchased a 25 gallon aquarium and have let it run with water (but no fish) for a week now. How should I begin transitioning the fish from the old aquarium to the new one?

Okay here goes. I have an aquarium with no lid but I will find one very soon. Here is what I have so far, a 10 to 15 gallon aquarium(rectangle) and a lot of tiny rocks for the floor( not as tiny but pretty big enough). So what are all the supplies needed for a tropical aquarium. And if you can name some brands for easy access. Thank You.

What is a good substitute for an aquarium cover?

ghostbetta asked:

I have a 10 gallon aquarium on my desk. My desk already has a Florescent light so I don’t want to shell out the money to buy a Aquarium cover + florescent light. What is a good replacement for an aquarium cover? I don’t think I want the terrarium covers because they’re wire screens- and they let dust through. Any suggestion?

How can accelerate the first nitrogen cycle in an aquarium?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009
Monkey Chunks asked:

Hello. I was wondering if the following method can work.
My 10 gallon aquarium had water in it and two small fish for a week. According to tests the water has very little nitrate nitrites. I bought a cooked shrimp , put it in a jar, then poured the aquarium water over it. In one day the water became cloudy. I am thinking , can the needed bacteria develop there . And afterwards could I pour it in the aquarium?

What are the best kinds of fish to keep in a hexagon shaped aquarium?

Sunday, December 20th, 2009
Jessica V asked:

My parents have a hexagon shaped tank in their house and they stock it with fish that never seem to live as long as they should. I would like my parent’s tank to be the best that it can be for the shape that it is and when I learn knew things I pass on the information to them. I’ve been interested in the art of fish keeping and aqua gardening for about a year now and I’ve learned a great deal since I first started the hobby. I was thinking about the aquarium at my parents house and I wonder what species of fish would thrive best in a hexagon shaped aquarium because I know its a very unnatural shape for the aquarium environment. Do you know of any fish that wouldn’t mind living in a tall hexagon aquarium? Please also tell me if you have any of these fish, how old they are, and if they’ve grown since you first got them.
I have a 55 gallon (rectangle shaped) aquarium with 4 fan-tailed goldfish and a 10 gallon (rectangle shaped) tank with 5 white skirt tetras. I bought the tetras because I wanted to support buying unpainted fish.
